People Incorporated Financial Services celebrates 20 years of service to small businesses

Abingdon-based certified Community Development Financing Institution (CDFI) celebrates 20 years of assisting small business owners in the region with premier financial products and business services.

May 17, 2012
Abingdon, VA  – People Incorporated Financial Services celebrated its 20th Anniversary with a celebration gala at Heartwood: Southwest Virginia’s Artisan Gateway in Abingdon, Virginia.   Attendees were welcomed by Board Chair, Charlotte Mullins, and remarks were made by Rob Goldsmith, President and CEO, as well as Deborah Wagner, Director of Economic Community Development. There were approximately 70 people in attendance, including many past and present clients, sponsors, community partners, and staff.

The Key Note speech was delivered by Bill Shelton, Director of the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.  Bill has been a steadfast supporter of People Incorporated’s microenterprise program as an economic development tool since the program’s inception.  The event also included a video presentation featuring many of the entrepreneurs who have been assisted by People Incorporated in the last 20 years.

“These entrepreneurs and their businesses are creating jobs for residents, promoting economic self-sufficiency, encouraging economic growth, and keeping our local economies healthy,” stated Rob Goldsmith, President and CEO of People Incorporated.  “We’ve come a long way in 20 years.  To date, 5,360 individuals have benefited directly from these services, but the far-reaching impact of the businesses built and nurtured is much greater than we can measure.”

People Incorporated would like to thank event sponsors Nixon Peabody, First Bank and Trust, Branch Banking & Trust and Curcio and Stout, PC.

About People Incorporated Financial Services
In 1992, People Incorporated piloted the first microenterprise development program in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Encouraged by the growth and success of that initiative, People Incorporated founded People Incorporated Financial Services (PIFS) to increase its community development lending capacity and activities.  The organization provides financial products that include microenterprise loans, business loans, consumer, credit-building and home improvement loans, and New Markets Tax Credits.  All of these financial products are accompanied by a comprehensive and progressive menu of development services and, together, reinforce the sustainability of businesses and communities.

People Incorporated Financial Services, a certified Community Development Financial Institution, promotes economic self-sufficiency and access to capital for low income residents and communities throughout its service area, providing business development and lending services, financial and credit literacy training, individual technical assistance, and marketing services to entrepreneurs to help start or expand businesses which, in turn, create jobs.  Since 1992, People Incorporated and its subsidiaries have deployed over $13 million in loans to 697 small businesses that have created or saved over 2,047 jobs.
