People Incorporated of Virginia's Benhams Head Start Center Receives 2012 Best of Bristol Award

Abingdon, VA- People Incorporated of Virginia is pleased to announce that its Benhams Head Start Center has been selected for the 2012 Best of Bristol Award in the Head Start category by the Bristol Award Program.  This facility is located in Bristol Virginia and serves 54 Head Start children and their families.

People Incorporated is the designated Head Start grantee for Russell and Washington Counties, the City of Bristol, Virginia and the Early Head Start grantee for the counties of Buchanan, Dickenson, Russell, Washington and the city of Bristol, Virginia.  People Incorporated opened its first Head Start Center in 1965 making it one of the longest standing programs of the agency; the program has continued expanding operations to provide early educational opportunities for low-income families throughout Southwest Virginia.  The agency currently offers a home-based and a center-based Head Start option with thirteen (13) Head Start and Early Head Start centers with the capacity to serve 457 children.

The 13 Head Start centers and the home-based services operated by People Incorporated provide a comprehensive child development program that promotes school readiness for income-eligible families and children ages three to five.  Services include early childhood education, developmental screenings, health, nutrition, social services, parent education, family development and parental involvement.  Head Start not only provides its students with quality pre-school education but also teaches parents how to be involved in their child’s education. Parents actively participate in program governance, volunteer with Head Start and attend parenting training, adult literacy, and career skills classes.
